This week (9/1-9/7) saw plenty of closures and openings across the city this week. Plenty of new developments will give Louisvillians plenty to look forward to over the next few months.

1. Kentucky Families Urge US Supreme Court To Rule Against Transgender Health Bans

Kentucky families and advocacy groups say that both Kentucky and Tennessee are discriminating against transgender youth for not giving them the same medication for intense distress as other children due to their gender dysphoria. According to the ACLU of Kentucky, medical professionals say that the established treatments for transgender youth are safe, effective and “necessary to protect transgender adolescents’ wellbeing.”

2. Louisville's South Central Library Looking For Artists For Residency

Louisville’s South Central Library location is looking for artists once again to take part in its COLLIDER Artist-In-Residence Program. The stipend, which was funded by Councilwoman Madonna Flood, gives artists around Louisville the opportunity to share their art with the community.

3. Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program Receives Thousands Of Business Applications

Last week, Gov. Andy Beshear (D) announced that the Kentucky Medical Marijuana Program had received nearly 5,000 business applications for licenses to sell medical marijuana to people across the Commonwealth. The governor added that the government’s only concern was handling such a large number of applicants, and that the last minute influx could pose challenges to expediting the process for these businesses.

4. Kroger Finally Reopens In East Louisville After $1.7 Million Renovations

The Kroger at Holiday Manor in east Louisville is back open after renovations that amounted to $1.7 million. The grocery chain says that customers will see significant improvements in shopping experiences with more products, more fresh food departments and improved lighting in the store.

Norton West Louisville Hospital

5. Norton West Louisville Hospital Sets Opening Date

The Norton West Louisville Hospital is nearly open, which would make it the first hospital opened in west Louisville in over a century. The new hospital is set to open on Nov. 11 to much anticipation. The hospital is set to include 24/7 emergency care, operating rooms and 20 inpatient beds at first, with more care to come after the hospital opens.

Sherman Minton Renewal

6. Sherman Minton Bridge Expected To Finish Work This Fall

The Sherman Minton Bridge’s work is nearly complete, with expected completion to be around mid-November. According to a news release, the bridge needed new hanger cables, and once completed, there will only be some minor work remaining. Crews have replaced nearly all outdated cables, specifically 116 out of 136 cables.

7. 1619 The Gathering Place Closes Its Doors

1619 The Gathering Place, a Portland-based events venue used for many different gathering events, closed its doors last week. In a Facebook post, it thanked the Louisville community for the opportunity to serve and the support and memories it shared with community members over the years.

8. Kentucky Derby Museum Receives $150,000 ‘Financial Commitment’ Over Next 3 Years From Churchill Downs

The Kentucky Derby Museum announced on Wednesday that it would be receiving a “financial commitment” of $150,000 over the next three years to bolster the museum’s in-house field trips for over 32,000 students across the city. The partnership will give the museum the opportunity to offer more outreach programs to give students the chance to see more of what the museum has to offer.
