What A Week

Two huge establishment Democratic Super PACs — i.e., NOT the keystone flops of Progress Kentucky — targeted Sen. Mitch McConnell with a huge TV ad buy last week. It’s doubtful these PACs would jump into Kentucky so early without hearing news that a solid candidate was about to enter the ring — Alison Lundergan Grimes, ahem — so the 2014 blood sport we’ll grow to loathe may finally begin any day now.

More than one in four (27 percent) of all Kentucky children now live in poverty, according to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s 2013 KIDS COUNT Data Book. The annual study ranked the state 34th in overall child wellbeing. The full breakdown: 32nd in economic wellbeing, 38th in family and community, 28th in education, and 31st in health. According to the press release, the state made gains in the latter two categories. Still, there is no room for celebration.

The New Republic featured Sen. Rand Paul in their cover story last week — pictured with his fingers crossed — detailing how he has abandoned the straight-talk libertarian tradition of his father and replaced it with the cold and conniving power plays and double talk of his new Sith Master, Lord McConnell. After all, if your goal is to be president, why would you want to hold on to quaint traits like integrity?

Shhh … Jefferson County libraries received a $750,000 grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation for construction on the first of three regional libraries. The Southwest Regional Library on Dixie Highway will serve about 100,000 residents through 40,000 square feet of resources, including books, community meeting spaces, classrooms and study areas, children’s and teen’s activity centers, wi-fi, and public-access computers. Ground breaks next week. Please cheer quietly.
