LG&E and Kentucky Utilities won’t raise your energy rates until, say, 2013, per an agreement reached between Pennsylvania Power and Light (which intends to purchase the two utilities) and several consumer interest groups and government regulators. Up to and beyond 2013, Pennsylvania Power won’t be allowed to raise rates to pay for services outside of Kentucky, and if the company makes a certain level of profits it must return half the extra amount to its customers.
Rolling Stone Contributing Editor Matt Taibbi is reportedly in the Bluegrass State in pursuit of Republican Senate candidate Rand Paul. According to the blog Barefoot & Progressive, Taibbi repeatedly asked Paul at a Northern Kentucky speaking event whether he thought Martin Luther King Jr. was a socialist. Paul didn’t respond. Assuming Taibbi is covering the race, Kentucky’s prodigal son will no doubt come out smelling like a rose.
A handful of Metro Council members led by Councilwoman Tina Ward-Pugh, D-9, have drafted a resolution opposing fees on the city’s existing bridges and roads as a means to pay for the $4.1 billion Ohio River Bridges Project. The measure making the rounds through City Hall calls it a “flawed policy to place tolls on existing transportation infrastructure,” adding that it is “fundamentally wrong to force tolls on hard-working citizens from Louisville.”
Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner Richie “Mr. Big Blue Basketball Man” Farmer and cranky platitude spewing establishment figure and state Senate President David Williams have announced they will run as Republicans for lieutenant governor and governor (respectively) in this godforsaken commonwealth we call “Kentucky.” Word on the street is their platform will combine the strategy of a zone defense, the cunning of Farmer’s mustache, and Williams’ pact with Satan.
