Louisville’s Weekly Zeitgeist Radar
Sen. Rand Paul may hate the Civil Rights Act, but he’s now the MLK of protecting your Liberty Junk from being touched by a TSA worker. Paul screamed bloody murder about being “detained” after refusing a pat down at Nashville International Airport, though the TSA denies any detainment. Oddly enough, he was flying to a pro-life rally full of people who want the government to force women seeking an abortion to have an ultrasound against their will.
Most days, tepid tap water has more gusto than our mayor. But as Greg Fischer fails to wish away allegations of tricking donors into paying off campaign debt, you can bet even his lukewarm blood is boiling. According to The Courier-Journal, businessman Ed Hart has filed paperwork with the Kentucky Registry of Election Finance claiming he was duped by the Fischer campaign. Specifically, he says donations intended for an inauguration table sponsorship went to cover campaign debt. Fischer has called the claims “disingenuous.”
Children, beware of errant balls: The Louisville Metro Police Department has reduced the suspension of a cop who ticketed a 7-year-old (yeah, you’re reading that correctly) for throwing a soccer ball at his truck. Former Police Chief Robert White suspended Officer Cody Chapelle for 15 days following the incident. The merit board heard his appeal last week and determined he should be reimbursed for nine of those unpaid work days.
First, Gov. Beshear denies the hospital merger, protecting Louisville’s only safety net hospital for the poor, then he goes and budgets more money for strapped child welfare services during tight economic times. Who is this man? The extra $21 million will help fund 300 new positions within the Department of Community Based Services. Considering $80 million has been cut from the department over the last four years, I think he owed us this one.
