Rumor & Innuendo

Pigskin head games. Think football isn’t a mind game? Spotted at the U of L football complex: A garbage can covered with Cardinal heads and slogans such as, “1st in the 4th” and “Fast and Physical.”Cardinal football side note signifying nothing. Apparently Coach Kragthorpe met radio color commentator Craig Swabek for the first time at pre-spring practice media day.Coach short arms. Former U of L nemesis Bobby Lutz stayed put at Charlotte after a whirlwind flirtation with South Alabama. It was a curious dalliance, a lateral move at best. Turns out Lutz was looking for security, with only two years left on his 49’ers contract. He’s staying put. But, according to a source, Charlotte has offered no extension, and many school fat cats remain upset over last season’s 14-16 record.Randolph Morris update. In four games with the Knicks through Sunday, the former Wildcat is averaging .5 ppg and 2.0 rpg. The obvious question: Would he have been better off staying at UK and playing another season under a kickass coach? By the by, more than a few wags wonder how he was able to cut deals with an agent and New York so quickly.Updated Derby picks. Remember last week when I guaranteed the win, place and show finishers in the Greatest Two Minutes In Sports. Well, uh, scratch that order of finish. After some reconsideration of Beyer ratings, dosage indices, invocation of Doolittle Theorems passed down through the decades, invoking the specter of former C-J racing guru Rick Cushing, eavesdropping on the wisdom of Turf Club Mahatma Mr. Bunny and passing a crystal over the names of the horses still in contention, I feel comfortable predicting the following order of finish: Win: Circular Quay (still pronounced “key”), Place: Curlin, Show: Street Sense. Let it be written, let it come to pass.Let’s play two ... indoors. Even if the thermometer isn’t cooperating, baseball season has commenced, ear muffs a necessity. Venturing where few dare to tread, here are your World Series participants and winner six months in advance: Detroit Tigers return, this time besting the Atlanta Braves, four games to one.seedyk@culturemaven.com
