THIS WEEK’S TWIN PEEKS:I KNOW WHO KILLED ME2007; DVD $26.95-39.95, RJust as her public meltdown was beginning, Lindsay Lohan wrapped this, what was to be her first non-tweeny starring role. She plays a young woman, abducted by a sadist, then found — minus some limbs! — but with a new identity. Unable to remember her previous life, she goes seeking who she was, who she is and why strange wounds keep appearing on her body. It all leads to a dark family secret.WAITRESS2007; DVD $29.95, PG-13We long ago fell in love with the dewey beauty Keri Russell and have just been waiting for her to find her breakout film. This isn’t it (she keeps her clothes on), but it is a phenomenal effort, filled with love and laughter and pain as she finds herself pregnant and attracted to her gynecologist (Nathan Fillion), while raising pie-making to a high art. A chick-flick, for sure, but one we’d sit through again.BRATZ: THE MOVIE2007; DVD $28.95, PGA quartet of tweeny freshmen spend time at the mall when not being herded around by their clique-building class president in this movie where everyone actually says, “Like, OMG, no way!” and “Way!” We don’t get paid enough.DANZON1991; DVD $29.95, URIf you’ve never heard of Mexican film legend Maria Rojo, here’s a perfect opportunity to correct that oversight. Here she plays a hard-working, self-sacrificing single mother. Her only moment of relaxation is the weekly dance where she sees her special friend, an older man whose politeness she cherishes. But when he suddenly stops coming, she worries and goes looking for him. A well-told tale of inner strength and personal values.DRUNKEN ANGEL1948; DVD $39.95, PG-13One of directing legend Akira Kurosawa’s earliest works, now available fully restored on HD. Toshiro Mifune stars as a violent, diseased criminal who befriends a jaded doctor in post-war Tokyo. The climax may be the most shocking, violent scene ever filmed, one that will stay with you for days. With all the intelligent bonus material you’ve come to expect in the Criterion Collection.FIRST SNOW2006; DVD $24.95-$24.96, RA psychic tells Guy Pearce that his days are numbered. A cheer rises from the movie-going public. Piper Perabo co-stars in this thriller/drama with lots of exposition about the nature of Fate.FUTURAMA THE MOVIE: BENDER’S BIG SCORE2007; DVD $29.95, URSomehow, against all odds, “Futurama” marches on ... but not on network TV. As Christmas 3007 approaches, the Earth faces utter annihilation when a new nemesis arises, one from which only Fry (Billy West), Leela (Katey Sagal) and, of course, Bender the robot (John Di Maggio) can save us! But can even they withstand the invasion of Nudist Alien Internet Scammers?! Only if they have the guts to use the Secret of Time Travel found tattooed on Fry’s butt!HATE-2-O2006; DVD $19.95, URA damned good effort from Italy about a girl (drop-dead gorgeous Chiara Conti) who carries the remains of her conjoined twin — a single tooth — in her shoulder, the rest having been “absorbed” in the womb. Bad things happen when she decides to remove it during a “purification” retreat on a lonely island.HOT ROD2007; DVD $29.95-39.95, PG-13Andy Samberg-starring vehicle with a lots of nice pratfalls about a picked-on nebbish who wants to be a stunt daredevil in order to raise enough money for his step-father’s surgery ... so he can kick his ass once he gets better.PAPRIKA2006; DVD $26.95-$38.96, RWe’ve seen this plot-device before — a machine that lets one person enter another’s dreams — but never done so well as in this beautiful anime written by Yasutaka Tsutsui. A young psychotherapist uses the machine to help people understand their subconscious mind, but when it is stolen by a “dream terrorist,” only she and a fellow scientist can save the world from madness.SKINWALKERS2007; DVD $28.95, PG-13Originally rated “R,” the producers re-cut this to PG-13 in the hopes of raising box-office revenues. That should tell you all you need to know about this “good werewolves vs. bad werewolves” action flick with lots of hot babes, snarly fight scenes and excellent wolfwork by Stan Winston.SPIRAL BOX SET: VIRIDIAN COLLECTION2007; DVD $49.95, URAn excellent anime series, with all requisite bonus goodies, about a young man, searching for his older brother, who disappears after an encounter with a mysterious group called the “Blade Children.”SUSANA1951; DVD $24.95, URAnother wonderful look at subtitled, Spanish sex and the hypocrisy of modern society from the lens of Luis Buñuel. Chuckles cruises around post-apocalyptic L.A. mumbling to himself and sub-machining, pasty-faced, Ray-Ban-clad undead vampire mutants.VITUS2006; DVD $29.95, PGAn amazing Swiss film about a child prodigy whose incredible intellect and preternatural musical abilities set him on a path to greatness. But expectations are so great that the people around him forget that he has a mind — and will — of his own.
